Jasper Krommenhoek was the surprise of the day at the Dutch World Cup qualification event on Friday, according to De Telegraaf. The outlet reports that he beat the top skaters over 5,000 metres, with Joy Beune and Jenning de Boo also making an impression.
NOS reports that Krommenhoek caught the favourites off guard in the 5,000-metre race. According to AD.nl, the entire Dutch top field had to give way to the new skating talent over five kilometres.
The outcome carried consequences for two Olympians. NU reports that Huizinga and Van de Bunt missed out on a World Cup ticket in the 5,000 metres.
In a separate development, NOS reports that De Boo skipped his second 500-metre race after a solid start to the season.
Speaking about his performance, Krommenhoek said a nasal spray made the difference, according to Schaatsen.nl. He also said he had already believed he was capable of this result.
The event determines which Dutch skaters earn places at the World Cup, making each distance a direct contest for tickets. Friday's results therefore reshaped the picture on the men's long distances, where the established names were beaten.
Attention now turns to the remaining qualification races, where those who missed out on Friday will have further chances to secure World Cup starts.
